Government of Canada Promotes Vitality of Publishing Industry in Canada

MONTREAL, April 1st, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced $20,000 in funding for the Société de promotion du livre, the publisher of Livre d'ici magazine and the Livre d'ici Internet electronic newsletter. This support will help the organization broaden its client base.

"Through its publications, the Société de promotion du livre informs members of the Canadian publishing industry and addresses issues affecting them," said Minister Frulla. "I want to congratulate the team at Livre d'ici for everything it has done to provide its clients with a relevant and objective view on current affairs in the publishing industry."

Livre d'ici Internet is aimed at publishing professionals in Quebec and French Canada. This year, the newsletter team will increase its efforts to reach booksellers, librarians, media representatives and publishing professionals in English Canada.

Financial assistance was provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Aid to Industry and Associations component of its Book Publishing Industry Development Program. This program seeks to enhance the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian-authored books, both domestically and internationally.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
