Government of Canada Supports Manitoba Magazine Publishers' Association

WINNIPEG, April 12, 2005 -- Reg Alcock, the President of the Treasury Board and Member of Parliament for Winnipeg South, announced today, on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women, Liza Frulla, that the Manitoba Magazine Publishers' Association will receive $31,000 from the Government of Canada. The funding will assist the Association in hosting the 2005 edition of the Manitoba Magazine Weekend, a gathering of representatives of the publishing industry.

"Organizations such as the Manitoba Magazine Publishers' Association provide invaluable assistance to Canadian publishing houses by increasing their network opportunities," said Minister Alcock. "This enables publishers to acquire the tools necessary to meet the needs of readers and to expand into new markets."

"The Government of Canada supports cultural organizations across Canada to help them promote local creators and enrich our collective heritage," said Minister Frulla. "This funding is proof of our commitment to provide Canadians with a wide range of high-quality Canadian magazines."

Activities scheduled for the Manitoba Magazine Weekend include a forum, professional development sessions, writing and editing workshops, public readings, and networking activities.

Financial support is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Support for Industry Development component of its Canada Magazine Fund. This program seeks to encourage the development of stronger and more financially viable small magazine-publishing firms.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
