Government of Canada Supports Innovative Volunteerism Project

TORONTO, April 15, 2005 -- Minister of State (Families and Caregivers) and Member of Parliament (Trinity--Spadina) Tony Ianno, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $80,000 in funding over three years for the Framework Foundation's Timeraiser project.

"The Framework Foundation makes our communities places where people support each other," said Minister of State Ianno. "It deserves recognition for its members' work with artists and young Canadians."

"Volunteerism has a key place in Canadians' lives," said Minister Frulla. "I am delighted that our government is able to support this project, which will benefit community organizations and bring greater recognition for many Canadian artists."

Launched in Toronto in March 2004, the Framework Foundation promotes volunteerism among Canadians aged 22 to 35. Its Timeraiser project organizes auctions of works by Canadian artists. Instead of money, bidders pledge hours of volunteer work for non-profit organizations. Timeraiser events will be held in several Canadian cities this year, including Toronto, Calgary and Montréal. The next Timeraiser auction will take place on April 16, 2005, at the Canadian Broadcasting Centre in Toronto.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under its Community Partnerships Program. Through this program, the Department works with other government departments and the volunteer sector to promote citizen participation in the development of Canadian society.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
