Dr. Fry Congratulates New Canadians, Calls on Them to Help Build a Stronger Canada

VANCOUVER, February 19, 1996 The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism)(Status of Women), today congratulated 125 of Canada's "newest citizens" and told them that they are now a "vital part of this unique nation." The number was chosen to mark the 125th year of British Columbia's entry into Confederation.

"I am proud to live in a country which embraces cultural, linguistic and regional diversity," said Dr. Fry. "Together, we can continue to build on a vision of a strong, united Canada and be proud in our accomplishments and the promise of our future together."

She continued: "Canada's laws and policies are based on the principle that all citizens have the right to participate actively in society regardless of mother tongue, origin, social class or sex. Everyone can contribute to our country's development and take a hand in building this country."

The ceremony is the final event of the "Canada Take it to Heart" Week (Feb. 12-Feb.19), which Canadians celebrated nation-wide to salute Canadian symbols, heritage, identity, values and citizenship. The week links together National Citizenship Week, National Flag of Canada Day (February 15) and Heritage Day (February 19). Also attending the ceremony were the Honourable Bill Barlee, B.C. Minister of Small Business, Tourism and Culture, Deputy Mayor Maggie Ip and Farouk Verjee, chairperson of Canada Place. Singer Ann Mortifee, Order of Canada, presided at the ceremony. The North Surrey Secondary School Band and Choir, led by performing artist Leon Bibb, provided the entertainment.

"Canadians have built a great country together, but this past week is not just about what we have accomplished in the past," the Secretary of State told the new Canadians. "In equal measure, it is about Canada's young people and new citizens from all over the world like you, contributing collectively to the essence and privilege of being a Canadian."
