Heritage Minister Sheila Copps Launches "One In A Million National Flag" Campaign

ST. JOHN'S, Nfld., February 19 Asserting that the Canadian flag stands for hope, freedom, justice, fairness, respect and opportunity, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Honourable Sheila Copps, today launched the One in a Million National Flag Challenge, inviting Canadians to fly one million more flags by this time next year.

Ms. Copps announced the launching at Signal Hill, St. John's, and said: "On this Heritage Day, we relive the triumphs and vision which fired the souls of our ancestors. We celebrate their heroics and their successes which have made Canada the number one country in the world."

The Minister said that this national campaign will be at the grassroots level. She called on businesses and companies to help the Canadian people put "one million maple leaves on the porches, the balconies, the school desks, the parks, the office desks, the cars, the ships, and the lapels of Canada."

The campaign will express the Canadian people's pride, said Ms. Copps, in living in "the greatest country on earth."
