Government of Canada a Partner in 20th Salon du Livre de Montréal

MONTREAL, October 28, 1997 -- The 20th Salon du livre de Montréal will receive support from the Government of Canada in the form of a financial contribution, Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps announced today.

"The Salon du livre de Montréal is a cultural event that testifies to the vitality of the French-language publishing industry in Canada. This international cultural showcase offers Canadian writers an ideal forum to exhibit their creations. The discussions are always lively, and the event overall is a valuable lever to the development of Canadian culture," Minister Copps said.

The Department of Canadian Heritage contributed $80,000 to the 20th Salon du livre through its Book Publishing Industry Development Program.

The Government of Canada has set up an Action Plan for the Greater Montreal Region, whose areas of activity include the development and growth of the cultural and tourism industries.
Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1997 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This initiative is an example of how this government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
