Copps Invites Canadians to Celebrate National Flag Day

OTTAWA, February 14, 1997 -- Tomorrow, on the occasion of the National Flag of Canada Day, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, joins with all Canadians in reaffirming the pride that they feel for their flag.

"The men and women who selected our flag thirty-two years ago could only hope that we would take that new symbol of Canadian identity to heart as we have," says Minister Copps.

"Our flag is the symbol by which our country is known around the world. It is the banner which expresses, without any words, our hopes for ourselves, and our dreams for our nation."

This past year, our symbol of national identity and determination has been well-represented around the world. Whether carried jubilantly by our athletes at the Atlanta Olympic Games or proudly displayed by Canadian business representatives in Asia, the maple leaf flag continues to grow as a respected symbol of accomplishment around the world.

Across Canada, citizens will be marking National Flag of Canada Day with celebrations and ceremonies. The Government of Canada congratulates them for their initiatives and encourages all Canadians to reflect on the values of individual, community and country embodied in our flag.
