Copps launches Canadian Symbols Kit

OTTAWA, February 17, 1997 -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today unveiled With Flying Colours, a multimedia kit for Canadian primary and secondary schools designed to raise awareness and appreciation of the symbols and values of our country.

"When I meet young Canadians, they don't hesitate to express their pride in this nation," said Ms. Copps. "We're giving them the resources to understand better the elements and the symbols of Canada's identity and the values they enshrine - our flag, our citizenship, our anthem, our bilingual and multicultural reality. As we prepare to enter the 21st century, it is timely to help young Canadians come to a greater understanding and appreciation of what we have built together as a nation, and their roles and responsibilities in defining our future."

The new With Flying Colours kit is built around Canadian symbols and values, and will be a useful tool for Canadian teachers throughout the school year. It explores Canada's rich and colourful array of national symbols and helps teachers organize in-class activities that bring these symbols and values to life.

Developed in collaboration with Canadian educators, the kit is being offered to interested schools among approximately 16,500 schools in Canada. It contains a printed teacher's guide, videos, an audio cassette and a CD-Rom, and has components for three age categories - 4 to 7 years, 8 to 11, and 12 years and older.

"We want our children to celebrate Canada With Flying Colours," said Ms. Copps. "We've designed the kit to be user-friendly and, what is most important, to be fun. Our children should share in the pleasure we all feel in our Canadian identity."

BACKGROUNDER

The With Flying Colours classroom kit, launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, has been designed to help Canadian students come to a greater understanding and appreciation of the symbols and values that define us as a country.

The multimedia kit will aid teachers in leading their students through a rich and colourful array of symbols, including our flag, citizenship, parks and historic sites, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and our bilingual and multicultural society. The values of tolerance, mutual respect, compassion and acceptance that underlie these symbols are also explored.

The self-contained kit includes a printed teacher's guide, videos, an audio cassette and a CD-Rom and is structured for students in three age groups - 4 to 7 years, 8 to 11, and 12 years and older. The kit has been designed to provide realistic and effective activities for the classroom supported by audio, audiovisual and print materials.

The kit has been developed in collaboration with Canadian educators to be user-friendly and fun for both teachers and students. The With Flying Colours multimedia kit is being offered to Canadian schools which express an interest (maximum two kits per school). In addition, each school can receive two Canadian flags with each kit - a 0.90m x 1.80m flag for public display and a 0.45m x 0.90m flag for classroom use.

The classroom kit was introduced during "Canada, Take It to Heart", the period from the second to the third Monday of February, which encompasses National Citizenship Week, National Flag Day of Canada (February 15) and Heritage Day (February 17).
