Canadians Meet the "One in a Million National Flag" Challenge

OTTAWA, February 15, 1997 -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today congratulated all Canadians for having successfully responded to the "One in a Million National Flag" challenge and having a million more Canadian Flags flying by National Flag Day this year.

"When we launched this challenge a year ago, we knew that we were aiming high, but now we can celebrate our success with pride," said Minister Copps. "Not only did we surpass our Flag Challenge, but we did it under budget. We also received some great support from a wide range of corporate partners and friends."

The "One in a Million National Flag" challenge, one of the government's most popular programs, cost $15,510,000, or about 50 cents per capita. More than 20,000 Canadians made personal contributions, totalling $200,000, and industry, national organizations and community groups added an additional $2,144,000 in donations or in various services.

"Canadians have expressed their pride in living in the best country in the world. I now invite all Canadians to take up this challenge and fly an even greater number of our national flags in the years to come," concluded the Minister.
