Government of Canada Supports Inclusive Social Policy

OTTAWA, December 1, 1999 -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women), and Mac Harb, Member of Parliament, Ottawa-Centre (Ontario), today announced funding of $162,150 over the next three years to the Canadian Council on Social Development (CCSD) for its initiative to promote inclusive social policy development. This initiative was designed to make social service policies more culturally relevant to Canadian communities.

"Integrating diversity considerations into social policy development is absolutely essential in creating communities that are truly inclusive," said Dr. Fry. "The enhanced research capacity this funding allows will improve the ability of public institutions to create and maintain partnerships with Canadians in diverse communities."

CCSD's existing research services and products focus on design and delivery of social programs. The new initiative will promote integration of culturally diverse concerns into social policy affecting broader communities. Social service and community organizations, as well as all levels of government, will benefit from research into policy and service development that is culturally appropriate.

The Canadian Council on Social Development is a national non-profit organization conducting research on issues such as income security, employment, poverty, child welfare, pensions and government social policies. The Council serves concerned citizens, labour, business, government and social service agencies.

The funding was provided by the Multiculturalism Program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
