Launch of the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000 (Nunavut)

IQUALUIT, February 22, 2000 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Eliza Kingdon, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for Nunavut, today launched the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000 for the Territory of Nunavut.

"The Canada Day Poster Challenge gives young Canadians, 18 years of age or under, an opportunity to show their pride in Canada by expressing in a creative way, what Canada and being Canadian means to them," said Minister Copps. "This is also a great way for these young people to take an active part in celebrating Canada Day."

The theme of the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000 is "Canada: The place to be!". It was Prime Minister Jean Chrétien who coined this slogan in his response to the most recent Speech from the Throne. His statement reflects, in part, the contributions that Canada's heroes have made to shaping the nation we know today.

"Through posters, young Canadians have the opportunity to demonstrate the pride they feel toward people and innovations that embody their national heritage," said Ms. Kingdon.
The Minister of Canadian Heritage will invite 13 provincial and territorial finalists to Ottawa to celebrate Canada Day on Parliament Hill, on July 1, 2000. They will join the Prime Minister, the Governor General and other Canadians in celebrating Canada's 133rd birthday.

The Canada Day Poster Challenge, initiated in 1987, is one of the most popular programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Young people have until March 17, 2000, to send their design to the Celebrate Canada Committee for Nunavut.
