Creation of the Prince of Wales Community Leader Scholarship

OTTAWA, April 26, 2001 -- The Government of Canada announced yesterday the creation of the Prince of Wales Community Leader Scholarship.

"On the occasion of the Royal Visit, which coincides with the International Year of Volunteers, the Government of Canada is proud to recognize the contribution of young people to the well-being of our communities with the creation of this scholarship," said Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.

"Because of the commitment of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales to numerous programs for young people, we are pleased that he has accepted to lend his name to this scholarship which will emphasize the amazing accomplishments of Canadians from all across the country," added Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps.

This scholarship was established by the Government of Canada as a gift to the Prince of Wales in honour of his visit and the International Year of Volunteers, 2001.

This scholarship will be awarded to young Canadians in recognition of their outstanding voluntary service as models of good citizenship. The recipients of the scholarship will have demonstrated a strong sense of social responsibility, a willingness to take positive action to address community needs and an ongoing contribution to their community.

Thirteen one-time scholarships of $3,000 (one for each province and territory) will be awarded, in December 2001, for a one-time-only basis, to Canadian students enrolled full-time in the first year of post-secondary program at an accredited university, college or CEGEP during the 2001-2002 academic year.
