National Volunteer Week - Letter to the Editor

Dear Sir or Madam:

SUBJECT : National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week from April 23 to 29, is an opportunity for all Canadians to pay tribute to the essential contribution that millions of volunteers make to our communities. There are 13 million people in Canada who volunteer their time to further a cause or to help others. They are a valuable resource and an important asset to the development and welfare of their community.

National Volunteer Week is community-based. Across Canada, special activities are being organized by some 200 local committees which include representatives from volunteer centres. These community efforts are supported by provincial associations and by the Canadian Association of Volunteer Bureaux and Centres (CAVBC). The Department of Canadian Heritage, through the Voluntary Action Program, works in partnership with the CAVBC to promote the Week at the national level.

To help mark this event, we invite you to develop a special promotional activity with your listeners. We have prepared a series of questions that your "on-air" hosts can use to test your listeners' knowledge of voluntarism. These questions, as well as the answers, are enclosed. Feel free to use them as often as you please.

National Volunteer Week is promoted solely through public service announcements. I therefore invite you to contact your local volunteer centre to obtain and disseminate information on the activities planned for this week and to raise public awareness of the importance of volunteer work in your community.

For further information on Canadian Heritage's participation in the promotion of National Volunteer Week, please contact Janet Lautenschlager at (819) 994-5446.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely yours,

Jean Chartier
Director General of Communications
Department of Canadian Heritage
