The Government of Canada Supports the Holding of an International Conference on Cultural Diversity in Montreal

SANTORINI, September 27, 2000 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps has announced that the Government of Canada will support the holding of an international conference on cultural diversity in March 2001, in Montreal.

In a letter addressed to the co-chairs of the Coalition for Cultural Diversity, Mr. Pierre Curzi and Mr. Jack Stoddard, Minister Copps announced her support for the Coalition's project to bring together cultural shareholders from various countries to Montreal in, March 2001.

"From its foundation, the Coalition has been able to count on the support of the Government of Canada. The work done by this organization has led to the creation of the International Network of Cultural Shareholders, thus enabling the voice of Canada, and of the whole world to be heard. The Network can count on my support," declared Minister Copps.

Moreover, Minister Copps has renewed her commitment in Santorini in order to ensure that Quebec's voice is heard and added to the other voices of Canada within the activities of the International Network on Cultural Policy in which the governments of 45 countries are represented.

"The Canadian model made its mark during the Network's meeting last year in Oaxaca, Mexico, and once again allowed the Canadian delegation to make its voices heard in a productive partnership. That is why I thank Ministers Maltais and Furey for their collaboration and commitment towards cultural diversity," added Ms. Copps.
