The Government of Canada is Proud to Support Rencontre X1

MONTRÉAL, October 17, 2001 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced financial support of $8,000 to this year's Rencontre Xl, a major exhibition of sculpture and painting to be held from November 9 to 11, 2001 in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

"Rencontre Xl offers Canadians an opportunity to discover the talent of painters and sculptors from at home and abroad. This eagerly awaited event in the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu region will showcase artists who seek inspiration in nature or everyday life in order to create works of high artistic calibre," said Minister Copps.

The Government of Canada's support for cultural organizations such as Rencontre Xl reflects its desire to create an environment that fosters the development of the arts and culture throughout Canada.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided Rencontre Xl with funding under its Cultural Initiatives Program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the February 2000 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
