Appointment to the Canada Council Announced

VANCOUVER, October 26, 2001 -- The Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced the appointment of David Y. H. Lui, of Vancouver, British Columbia, as a member of the Canada Council. The appointment is for a three-year term.

A member of Canada's performing arts community, Mr. Lui has made his expertise available to a number of government departments, service agencies and performing arts organizations. He has served as the producer of the cultural program and gala evenings for the Asian Development Bank Conference; producer of several United Way kickoffs and galas; and producer of the Discover Dance Series.

Since 1970, Mr. Lui has presented thousands of dance, music and theatrical performances by important artists and companies such as the National Ballet of Canada, Shirley MacLaine, the Philadelphia Orchestra with Eugene Ormandy and the Dance Theatre of Harlem. As Founding Artistic Director of the Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival, he conceived and established its cultural program.

A founding member of the board of the British Columbia Arts Council, he is currently Chair of CTV British Columbia's Community Council and a board member of the Dance Foundation.

He was appointed Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of his contribution to the arts in Canada.

"The appointment of Mr. Lui to the Canada Council is another example of the importance that the Government and that I, personally, place on cultural diversity," said Minister Copps. "I firmly believe that we must continue to reflect Canada's mosaic by having more Canadians from the various cultural and ethnic backgrounds at the decision-making levels of our cultural institutions and boards."

The Canada Council fosters and promotes the study, enjoyment and production of works in the arts by providing assistance to individual artists and arts organizations through a peer assessment process. It also administers the Public Lending Right program of payments to authors; co-ordinates the development of UNESCO activities in Canada, and co-ordinates Canadian participation in UNESCO activities abroad. The Canada Council works closely with the Department of Canadian Heritage in the delivery of its Sound Recording Development Program and the Book Publishing Industry Development Program.
