Sheila Copps Announces Funding for Royal Botanical Gardens

OTTAWA, January 31st, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $258,600 for the Royal Botanical Gardens, in Burlington, Ontario, through the Cultural Spaces Canada Program.

Minister Copps indicated that the funding for the Royal Botanical Gardens will be used to purchase external and internal movable structures, sound equipment, and reception and hospitality equipment.

"We are committed to help Canadians enjoy a strong cultural sector, which contributes to social cohesion. The funding provided today will allow the Royal Botanical Gardens to increase its capacity to present artistic activities and events on-line, to reach new audiences and to promote repeat visits throughout the year," added Minister Copps.

Through the Cultural Spaces Program, the Canadian Heritage Department funds up to 33 percent of total eligible project costs for construction and renovation of arts and heritage facilities. The Department also provides project funding to adapt non-cultural buildings for use as arts and heritage facilities.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget, and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
