Minister Copps Announces Major Contribution to the Arts and Heritage in OntarioTORONTO, February 14, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced an investment of $17,593,344 for the arts and heritage in Ontario."This is a watershed period for the arts and heritage in Canada. The Government of Canada has clearly indicated its commitment to supporting access to the arts, fostering excellence, diversity and creativity, and increasing the stability of the arts sector," said Minister Copps. Today's investment is made through the following four programs: Cultural Spaces Canada: 14 projects for a total of $7,851,944 Arts Presentation Canada: 23 projects for a total of $568,000 Cultural Initiatives Program: 63 projects for a total of $1,743,400 National Arts Training Contribution Program: 10 projects for a total of $7,430,000 Total: $17,593,344 The Government of Canada supports cultural infrastructure through Cultural Spaces Canada; performing arts presenters through Arts Presentation Canada and the Cultural Initiatives Program; and young talent through the National Arts Training Contribution Program This investment of more than $17 million represents the first round of projects to be supported under Arts Presentation Canada and Cultural Spaces Canada programs which were created following the announcement of new funding for the arts and culture made by the Prime Minister of Canada and the Minister of Canadian Heritage on May 2, 2001. More than ever, it is essential to expand opportunities for expression and to deepen connections between our communities, our regions, between Canada and the world. It is by giving all Canadians access to the rich diversity which defines us that we will contribute to the development of our society and of humanity as a whole," added Minister Copps. Funding is available for construction and renovation of arts and heritage facilities, specialized equipment purchases, feasibility studies, and for projects that transform buildings that were not previously used for cultural purposes into arts or heritage facilities. The program helps presenters to diversify their artistic offerings, engage in activities to reach out to new audiences, increase interaction between artists and local residents, and undertake networking initiatives. Ultimately, it will have a positive impact on the number of artistic tours across the country. The Development Support component encourages the development and emergence of new arts presenters and presenting initiatives, particularly in under-served communities. Deadline: Applicants have a choice of either an April 30th or September 30th deadline. Note that the Development Support component has an annual deadline of April 30th. This is the last fiscal year during which applications to CIP will be considered. Festivals previously eligible can submit a request under the Arts Presentation Canada program. The program provides stabilizing support on an annual or multi-year basis for the ongoing operational activities of the institution's professional program. Funding is not for special projects or capital infrastructure. Deadline: The deadline is June 30.
