Minister Copps Announces Major Contribution to the Arts and Heritage in Ontario

TORONTO, February 14, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced an investment of $17,593,344 for the arts and heritage in Ontario.

"This is a watershed period for the arts and heritage in Canada. The Government of Canada has clearly indicated its commitment to supporting access to the arts, fostering excellence, diversity and creativity, and increasing the stability of the arts sector," said Minister Copps.

Today's investment is made through the following four programs:

Cultural Spaces Canada: 14 projects for a total of $7,851,944
Arts Presentation Canada: 23 projects for a total of $568,000
Cultural Initiatives Program: 63 projects for a total of $1,743,400
National Arts Training Contribution Program: 10 projects for a total of $7,430,000

Total: $17,593,344

The Government of Canada supports cultural infrastructure through Cultural Spaces Canada; performing arts presenters through Arts Presentation Canada and the Cultural Initiatives Program; and young talent through the National Arts Training Contribution Program

This investment of more than $17 million represents the first round of projects to be supported under Arts Presentation Canada and Cultural Spaces Canada programs which were created following the announcement of new funding for the arts and culture made by the Prime Minister of Canada and the Minister of Canadian Heritage on May 2, 2001.

"Canada is known for its spirit of innovation and open society. More than ever, it is essential to expand opportunities for expression and to deepen connections between our communities, our regions, between Canada and the world. It is by giving all Canadians access to the rich diversity which defines us that we will contribute to the development of our society and of humanity as a whole," added Minister Copps.

Program guidelines and application forms are available on the Department of Canadian Heritage Web site under "Application Forms" at www.canadianheritage.gc.ca

Funding for these projects was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework

Ultimately, it will have a positive impact on the number of artistic tours across the country. The Development Support component encourages the development and emergence of new arts presenters and presenting initiatives, particularly in under-served communities.

Deadline:
Applicants have a choice of either an April 30th or September 30th deadline. Note that the Development Support component has an annual deadline of April 30th.
