The Government of Canada Announces Funding for the Mariposa Folk Festival

OTTAWA, February 14, 2002 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Secretary of State (Amateur Sport) and Member of Parliament (Simcoe North) Paul DeVillers today announced funding of $25,000 for the Mariposa Folk Festival, to be held in Orillia, Ontario, from July 5 to 7.

"The Mariposa Folk Festival brings together Francophone, Anglophone and Aboriginal artists to celebrate our creative spirit. This important gathering offers the Canadian public a great opportunity to appreciate and celebrate the rich diversity of traditional and folk music in Canada," said Secretary of State DeVillers.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided funding to the 42nd Mariposa Folk Festival under the Cultural Initiatives Program (CIP). This is the last fiscal year during which applications to CIP will be considered. Festivals previously eligible can submit a request under the Arts Presentation Canada program.

Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
