Government of Canada Announces a Contribution to the Arts and Heritage in New Brunswick

MONCTON, March 8, 2002 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Minister of Labour and Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) Claudette Bradshaw today announced an investment of $1,220,105 for the arts and heritage in New Brunswick.

"The Government of Canada is committed to help Canadians enjoy strong cultural sector. The funding provided today will help increase capacity to present quality artistic events and reach new audiences," said Minister Bradshaw.

Today's funding is allocated to the following organizations:

--La Coopérative de Théâtre de l'Escaouette Inc. in Moncton: $920,105 over two years
--Capitol Theatre in Moncton: $300,000 over three years

This contribution w ill enable these establishments to proceed with improvements that will greatly improve entertainment services provided in New Brunswick.The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided funding to these projects under its Cultural Spaces Canada program. Through this program, the Department contributes up to 33% of total eligible project costs for the construction and renovation of arts and heritage facilities, as well as for projects that transform buildings that were not previously used for cultural purposes into arts or heritage facilities.Funding for these projects was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
