Government of Canada Announces Support for Thunder Bay's Magnus Theatre

THUNDER BAY, September 15, 2001 -- On behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Joe Comuzzi, Member of Parliament for Thunder BayÑSuperior North, today announced funding of $376,047 under Cultural Spaces Canada to Magnus Theatre to purchase specialized equipment for its new theatre facility.

The Government of Canada's contribution is towards the purchase of new specialized equipment, the most significant of which is a fully equipped fly tower. Other specialized equipment to be purchased as part of this project includes: lighting, seating, a heat exchange unit, an elevator, dance flooring and digital imaging equipment. The specialized equipment purchase is part of a larger project that involves transforming a school building in downtown Thunder Bay into the new home for the theatre. The new equipment will provide Magnus Theatre's audiences with an enhanced live theatre experience.

"Located in the heart of Thunder Bay, Magnus Theatre's new home will be an extraordinary venue for high-quality cultural events for Thunder Bay and the surrounding region. This central location will allow the theatre to play a pivotal role in the community, offering opportunities for cultural growth and exchanges throughout the year," said Mr. Comuzzi.

Through Cultural Spaces Canada, the Department of Canadian Heritage provides funding to successful applicants of up to 33 per cent of total eligible project costs for construction and renovation of arts and heritage facilities as well as for projects that transform buildings that were not previously used for cultural purposes into arts or heritage facilities. The Department provides funding of up to 50 per cent of total eligible project costs for specialized equipment purchases and feasibility studies.

"A thriving cultural sector is an essential part of strengthening our quality of life. It tells us who we are, where we have come from and what matters to us. In order to ensure that Canadians can enjoy the benefits of a strong cultural sector, this Government will help develop and improve cultural facilities in all parts of the country," added Mr. Comuzzi.

There is no deadline for this program. Applications are processed as they are received and are eligible for funding within the same federal fiscal year that they are received. Applications received after October 31 of a given fiscal year might not be considered for funding until the following fiscal year.

Cultural Spaces Canada was created as a result of the announcement of more than $500 million in new funding for the arts and culture made by the Prime Minister of Canada and the Minister of Canadian Heritage on May 2, 2001.

The Cultural Spaces Canada program guidelines and application form are available on the Department of Canadian Heritage web site under "Application Forms" at the following address: www.canadianheritage.gc.ca
