Minister of Canadian Heritage Launches Canadian Content Review

OTTAWA, April 2, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced a review of the definition of Canadian content, as it applies to film and television production. Canadian Content in the 21st Century is a discussion paper that provides the framework for the review.

"Today's definitions of Canadian content for film and television have been in place for 30 years," said Minister Copps. "We are asking Canadians to help us define what makes a film or television production Canadian. It is time to have an open discussion with the industry and all Canadians on this issue."

The Canadian content definitions are used to determine which film and television productions are eligible for funding and which programs meet broadcasters' obligations for television airplay.

Minister Copps also announced that François Macerola has agreed to take on the challenging assignment of compiling the views generated by this review and making a report to the Minister.

"Mr. Macerola has the skills and experience required to lead such an important review," said Minister Copps. "I look forward to hearing what Canadians have to say and to receiving Mr. Macerola's report."

Details of the review process and invitations to comment will be published in the Canada Gazette and posted on the Web site of the Department of Canadian Heritage at www.canadianheritage.gc.ca. Canadians are invited to comment on these issues by May 31, 2002.

For more information on this review, people are invited to contact Mr. Macerola at
