Minister Copps Announces Funding for the 23rd Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

MONTRÉAL, June 25, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced funding of $125,000 for the 23rd Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. This major cultural event will be held from June 27 to July 7, in Montréal.

"I am proud to support this major festival, which draws spectators and musicians from around the world," said Minister Copps. "The Festival reflects the artistic effervescence and cultural vitality that are the hallmarks of Montréal. Canadians attending the event discover new musical trends that enrich our culture."

The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal serves as a meeting place for jazz fans, internationally renowned musicians and emerging young performers. For 11 days, the Festival will offer audiences more than 500 indoor and outdoor concerts, featuring some 2500 performers from 20 countries.

The Department of Canadian Heritage funding is providing under its Cultural Initiatives Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
