The Government of Canada is Proud to be Associated with the 12th Edition of Rencontre

SAINT-JEAN-SUR-RICHELIEU, October 16, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced $10,000 in funding for 12th edition of Rencontre, an arts-focussed cultural festival, to be held from October 17 to 20, in the city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.

"Rencontre allows Canadians to discover and appreciate sculpture as a form of artistic expression in its own right. I'm particularly proud to contribute to this event," said Minister Copps. "My thanks to the artists, organizers and volunteers who make this event happen and help stimulate the cultural dynamism of our country."

With close to 1300 works, by more than 150 artists from all across Canada and other parts of the world, Rencontre encourages the distribution of works on a national and international scale. Presented in four public spaces in the city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, this event also contributes to the development of the artform by allowing exchange among sculptors.

Financial assistance is being provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage, through its Cultural Initiatives Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
