Government of Canada Supports Alliage Éditeur, Décarie Éditeur, Éditions Banjo, Modulo Éditeur, and Modulo-griffon

MONTREAL, February 17, 2004 -- The Honourable Irwin Cotler, Minister of Justice, Attorney General of Canada and Member of Parliament (Mount Royal), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced funding of $20,646 for Alliage Éditeur, $80,108 for Décarie Éditeur, $56,782 for Éditions Banjo, $279,955 for Modulo Éditeur, and $106,940 for Modulo-Griffon.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support the efforts of these publishers to offer practical, innovative, and accessible books," said Minister Cotler. "I congratulate them especially for listening to teachers and producing Canadian material that meets their needs."

Founded in 1986, Alliage Éditeur specializes in publishing learning packages, popular science writing, and short stage plays for students aged 5 to 12. The funding will enable this firm to lower production costs and increase marketing activities in order to better withstand competition.

Décarie Éditeur was created in 1978 and publishes technical, scientific, and academic works for use in university and college teaching. The funding will enable it to maintain its high reputation in these two niches, and to distribute books by Canadian authors in national and international markets.

Éditions Banjo was established in 1984 under the name of Éditions du Raton Laveur. It operates in the highly specialized niche of youth literature. The funding will enable it to expand production of new titles and increase efforts to market its catalogue.

Modulo Éditeur was started in 1970 and publishes textbooks for elementary and high school teaching programs. The funding will be used for development of new products and for various promotional activities.

Modulo-Griffon, which began in 1969 under the name of Le Griffon d'argile, publishes college and university textbooks. The funding will be used for development of new products and for various promotional activities.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through two components of its Book Publishing Industry Development Program (BPIDP): Aid to Publishers, and Support for the Canadian Book Industry Supply Chain Initiative. The BPIDP seeks to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books at home and abroad.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
