Government of Canada Supports Canadian Literary and Arts Magazines
Ottawa, February 27, 2004 -- The Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced the creation of a new funding component to support Canadian literary and arts magazines. The Government of Canada recognizes the important role that these publications play by providing access to artistic creations by Canadian artists and by encouraging dialogue among arts communities."Canada has many literary and arts magazines, with a growing readership across the country. These magazines forge ties between different communities and help us better appreciate the Canadian cultural mosaic," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "This component is the latest element of the Government of Canada's policy concerning the Canadian magazine publishing industry. It will encourage the production of high-quality magazines presenting the works of a wide variety of Canadian artists."
The Canada Magazine Fund and the Canada Council for the Arts worked in close cooperation to develop the Support for Arts and Literary Magazines component, which complements the programs already offered through the Canada Magazine Fund. Consultations with representatives of the publishing industry helped ensure that this component would meet the expectations of publishers, in addition to effectively managing public funds.
The Support for Arts and Literary Magazines component will have a budget of one million dollars. Its aim is to enhance the viability of Canadian magazines that promote arts and literature in Canada.
