The Salon du Livre De L'outaouais Celebrates 25 Years of Promoting Canadian Books and Writers

GATINEAU, March 11, 2004 -- Marcel Proulx, Member of Parliament (Hull--Aylmer), on behalf of the Honourable Hélène Chalifour Scherrer, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced the Government of Canada's participation in the Salon du livre de l'Outaouais.

"I want to congratulate the Salon du livre de l'Outaouais for the work it has accomplished over the past 25 years," said Mr. Proulx. "Each year, the Salon attracts more than 30 000 visitors. It is an excellent forum for writers from across the region and elsewhere in Canada. I wish the Salon similar success for the next 25 years."

"The Government of Canada is proud to support the Salon and to offer Canadians access to a wide choice of books by Canadian writers," said Minister Chalifour Scherrer. "On its 25th anniversary, I want to congratulate the organizers of the Salon du livre de l'Outaouais, which, each year, helps increase the audience base for Canadian books and writers."

The Salon du livre de l'Outaouais will receive funding of $37,000 to promote Canadian books and writers, and the pleasure of reading. Readers are able to interact with some 350 writers who attend the event. The Salon, taking place from March 24 to 28, also promotes exchanges among publishers, bookshops, and librarians. The Salon du livre de l'Outaouais is the third-largest book exhibit in French Canada.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Aid to Industry and Associations component of the Book Publishing Industry Development Program (BPIDP). Also celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, BPIDP seeks to strengthen the capacity of the Canadian-owned and -controlled sector of the industry to publish and market Canadian books in both domestic and international markets.

Funding for this initiative is provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
