Government of Canada Supports Carleton University in its Efforts to Use Technology in the Delivery of Canadian Cultural Content

OTTAWA, October 15, 2004 -- Mauril Bélanger, Deputy Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Member of Parliament (Ottawa-Vanier), on behalf of Liza Frulla, Minister of Canadian Heritage, today announced funding of $780,819 for Carleton University, in support of its two research projects, the Digital Architectural (Re)Construction Program and Native Drums.

"These projects exemplify the Government of Canada's commitment to both encouraging and unleashing the talent of our researchers, as well as fostering partnerships that bring together the public and private sectors, and the academic community," said Mr. Bélanger. "I would like to congratulate Carleton University and its network of partners for the impressive quality of their research and content digitization projects. These endeavours will provide Internet users from across Canada and around the world with a unique perspective on Canada's built heritage and some of the traditions of the First Nations."

"Our Government recognizes the importance of fostering an environment that will enable Canada to be a world leader in the creation and production of digital cultural content," said Minister Frulla. "Thanks to projects like these, Internet users everywhere can discover the great richness of Canadian culture."

The Digital Architectural (Re)Construction Program project will receive financing of $460,320 to be used in the ongoing development of three-dimensional imaging. The research network responsible for this project will focus on the acquisition, creation, viewing, archiving, accessing and sharing of high resolution images.

The Native Drums project will receive funding of $320,499 in support of its efforts to provide Internet users with unique insights into the importance and the role of music in the culture and traditions of Aboriginal peoples. An educational Web site and a database of images, as well as audio and video recordings will be made available online on the themes of drums and music in Aboriginal society.

The Department of Canadian Heritage is providing this funding through the New Media Research Networks Fund and the Partnerships Fund, two of the components of the Canadian Culture Online Program.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
