Government of Canada Supports the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island

LENNOX ISLAND, March 14, 2005 -- Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $50,000 in funding for the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of Prince Edward Island. The funds will allow the organization to further develop its Web site.

"This project will enable Canadians to learn more about the culture and traditions of the Lennox Island First Nations and the Mi'Kmaq people," said Mr. Murphy. "Using the Web site's new audio and video features, Internet users will also be able to get an idea of the potential for eco-tourism on Lennox Island."

"The Internet is a valuable tool to make known our values, the events that shaped our history and the people who built our country," said Minister Frulla.

The Web site will feature innovative new content such as 360-degree panorama graphics, animation, a storytelling component, and interactive video. The improved site will be geared towards three levels of school-aged children: kindergarten to grade six, grade seven to nine, and grade ten to twelve.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Culture Online strategy, which encourages a uniquely Canadian presence on the Internet.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
