Government of Canada Supports Development of Music Web Site by Des Draveurs School Board

GATINEAU, April 13, 2005 -- Member of Parliament (Gatineau) Françoise Boivin, on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Liza Frulla, today announced $48,560 in funding for the Des Draveurs School Board. This funding will enable the school board to develop an educational Web site about the history of French-language music and songs in Canada.

"Our music and our song eloquently convey our dreams and our experiences," said Ms. Boivin. "This Web site will allow young people from across the country and around the world to discover the rich diversity of French-language music and songs in Canada and to learn more about the history of Francophones who have enriched our cultural life for 400 years."

"I am pleased to support this project, which highlights our rich cultural heritage for the benefit of younger generations," said Minister Frulla. "This Web site, which makes use of new technologies and the talents of young singers, represents an original and exciting way to preserve our history."

The Web site will feature some 20 songs recorded by young choir members. The songs represent the history of Francophones in Canada since their arrival in 1604. The site will also include the music and lyrics of the musical selections. Although most of the songs were written in French, some will be recorded in English and certain Aboriginal languages.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Partnerships Fund component of its Canadian Culture Online initiative. The primary objective of the fund is to connect all Canadians, particularly youth, with the riches of Canada's heritage. It achieves this by making Canadian cultural collections held by provincial, municipal, and local cultural organizations available on the Internet in both official languages.

Funding announced today was provided for in the March 2004 federal budget.
