Government of Canada Supports the Kelowna Art Gallery

VANCOUVER, June 7, 2005 -- Minister of Industry and Member of Parliament (Vancouver Kingsway) David L. Emerson, on behalf of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla, today announced $90,783 in funding for the Kelowna Art Gallery. The funds will enable the Gallery to acquire specialized equipment in order to increase its storage capacity in preparation for its expansion, planned for 2010.

"The Kelowna Art Gallery plays a significant role in the cultural life of the Okanagan Valley, featuring artwork from the area and elsewhere, and offering varied programs for people of all ages," said Minister Emerson. "I am very pleased that our government is able to help the Gallery better serve the community."

"By investing in our cultural institutions, we are ensuring the vitality of our diverse communities," said Minister Frulla. "Modern equipment and upgraded facilities increase the ability of cultural organizations to preserve and present our heritage, as well as to continue offering innovative programs to Canadians."

The Kelowna Art Gallery is located in the heart of Kelowna's Downtown Cultural District and is the foremost public art gallery in the Okanagan Valley. Since it was established in 1976, the gallery has expanded and changed location. It still continues growing to meet the needs of the community.

Financial assistance is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to performing arts, visual arts, media arts, and also improves physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation.

Funding announced today was provided for in the February 2005 federal budget.
