B.C. Apparel Industry Receives Marketing Support Under Canada-B.C. Agreement

VICTORIA, November 27, 1995 British Columbia's apparel industry received a non- repayable contribution under the Canada-B.C. Agreement on Communications and Cultural Industries to assist in the costs of marketing its products outside the province, Canadian Heritage Minister Michel Dupuy and B.C. Minister of Small Business, Tourism and Culture Bill Barlee announced today.

"This is a unique marketing opportunity for the talented B.C. apparel industry," said Mr. Dupuy. "This a timely opportunity that will provide a great boost for B.C. designers. I am pleased that the Canada-B.C. Agreement is supporting such a sound initiative."

Mr. Barlee said: "B.C. is increasingly recognized as an important player in the apparel industry. Our designers and manufacturers have made brilliant contributions to its development at the national level and, at home in our province, they have created jobs and diversified the economy."

Apparel B.C., an industry association representing 220 companies that employ 6,000 people, including 400 clothing designers, will use the $21,235 contribution to produce print portfolios and a video that showcases some of B.C.'s top products and designs. These promotional materials were first used at a ready-to-wear event in Toronto on September 9, 1995 and later at similar international events.

The Canada-B.C. Agreement is a two-year, $9 million federal-provincial initiative designed to help develop and apply innovative technology, to create new markets for products and services, and to strengthen the industrial infrastructure by sharing costs with project proponents.

The Agreement is administered by Industry Canada and Canadian Heritage on the federal side, and on the provincial side by the Ministry of Employment and Investment and the Ministry of Small Business, Tourism and Culture.

Funding for this project was provided for in the 1995 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework. This initiative is an example of how this government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
