The Government of Canada is Proud to Support the 17th Edition of the Just for Laughs Festival

OTTAWA, May 25, 1999 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced a $100,000 grant for the 1999 edition of the Just for Laughs Festival. This 17th edition will take place in Montreal from July 15 to July 25, 1999.

"By attracting hundreds of artists and numerous spectators every year since its creation, the Just for Laughs Festival is a reminder that humour is a universal form of communication and entertainment. The Festival is a veritable springboard for humorists from Canada and abroad, and it is helping to make Montreal a well-known city of choice for all those who want to laugh," said Minister Copps.

The Government of Canada is proud to support the Just for Laughs Festival and many other cultural events that promote the development and growth of arts and culture in Canada.

In this Year of La Francophonie canadienne, the festival reflects the cultural and artistic vitality of Francophones from all over Canada.

The Department of Canadian Heritage has provided this financial assistance to the 1999 edition of the Just for Laughs Festival through its Cultural Initiatives Program. Funding for this project was provided for in the February 1999 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing fiscal framework.
