Canada's New Government Supports the Conseil des arts de Chéticamp

OTTAWA, October 31, 2006

- The Honourable Beverley J. Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of Women, today announced funding for the Conseil des arts de Chéticamp. These funds will help the group establish an arts creation and presentation facility in the rural Acadian community of Chéticamp, in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

"Our Government is committed to investing in the creative potential of our communities," said Minister Oda. "This initiative will enrich Nova Scotia's cultural life by showcasing the talent in the performing arts in this Acadian community."

The funds will allow the Conseil des arts de Chéticamp to purchase specialized sound, lighting, and video equipment, as well as curtains and seats that will help transform the NDA school auditorium into a 400 seat theatre where Anglophone and Francophone artists can perform. This joint initiative with the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial will give the population access to high-quality performances.

Created in 1999, the Conseil des arts de Chéticamp promotes the French language and helps preserve the rich cultural heritage of the greater Chéticamp community. To do this, the council proposes various cultural activities for youth and the population at large.

Canada's new Government's support of $215,000 is provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Cultural Spaces Canada program. This program supports cultural infrastructure projects that increase access for Canadians to the performing, visual, and media arts and that improve physical conditions for artistic creativity and innovation.
