Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000 Finalist for Quebec Announced

MONTRÉAL, April 18, 2000 -- Ms. Barbara Seal, C.M., President of the Selection Committee for the Quebec Region, announced today that Marie-Ève Fortin, 16, of Longueuil, has been chosen as the Quebec finalist in the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000. The name of the winner was announced at a ceremony in St.Hubert.

The second and third place artists were Maya Gorczyca, 12, of St.Bruno, followed by a joint effort by Andrée-Anne Bédard, 15, and Mélissa Forgues, 15, of Loretteville.

Sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000 was open to young people 18 years of age and under and drew approximately 2000 entries across Quebec. Participants were invited to use their imagination to create posters that showed their pride in Canada by interpreting the Poster Challenge theme, Canada: The Place to Be!

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. All finalists and their guardian will be guests of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps in Ottawa, on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.

Finalist Marie-Ève Fortin received a Pentium-processor computer donated by the Celebrate Canada Committee for the Quebec Region and Access Info-Tech. In an effort to recognize the talent and creativity of these young artists, other prizes were provided by various sponsors. The Macdonald Cartier Memorial High School was also awarded a Pentium-processor computer in recognition of its high rate of student participation.
