Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000 Finalist for Saskatchewan Announced

REGINA, April 18, 2000 -- Ms. Joy Pelling, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for Saskatchewan, announced today that Angela Minter, 14, of Prince Albert, has been chosen as the Saskatchewan finalist in the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000. The winner was announced at a ceremony at Canada Place, Regina, in the presence of Her Honour, Lieutenant-Governor Dr. Lynda M. Haverstock.

The second and third place artists were Anita Wandzura, 15, of Saskatoon, and Jessica Myren, 16, of Ogema.

Sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000 was open to young people 18 years of age and under and drew approximately 1,250 entries from across Saskatchewan. Participants were invited to create posters interpreting the Poster Challenge theme, Canada: The Place to Be!

"The Canada Day Committee for Saskatchewan would like to thank teachers and students from across Saskatchewan for their great support for the poster challenge this year," said Ms. Pelling. "I would like to commend all the students who entered for the creativity and thought displayed in their artwork."

Angela Minter's poster design will compete with twelve other provincial and territorial finalists to become the official Canada Day poster for 2000. Angela, the other finalists and their guardians, will be guests of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps for Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.

Each of the top three Saskatchewan poster artists will receive framed copies of their poster, courtesy Canadian Heritage. Jasc Software Canada, Ltd., the official software sponsor of the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2000, will provide Jasc Paint Shop Pro Version 6 software programs to them as well. Each provincial / territorial finalist will receive a copy of the Jasc Media Center Plus 3.

In addition to the first, second, and third place entries for Saskatchewan, the Celebrate Canada Committee for Saskatchewan also recognized the efforts of 10 additional young artists who entered the contest with Honourable Mention certificates.
