Sheila Copps Invites Young People in the Northwest Territories to Participate in the 2002 Canada Day Poster Challenge

YELLOWKNIFE, January, 30, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today invited all students in the Northwest Territories to participate in the 2002 Canada Day Poster Challenge.

"The Canada Day Poster Challenge encourages Canadians 18 and under to express their national pride and their hopes for Canada. Young people embody the future of our society and our values. The Poster Challenge provides them with an opportunity to give new meaning to the citizenship they share with one another and to celebrate being a part of Canadian society, a society recognized around the world for its compassion, its bilingualism and multiculturalism, and its commitment to democracy," said Minister Copps.

The theme for the 2002 Canada Day Poster Challenge is A Celebration of Canadian Firsts. "Students are invited to highlight personal exploits, remarkable achievements or Canadian contributions in the world. The Poster Challenge provides them with an opportunity to further appreciate the richness of their national heritage," added Minister Copps.

In 2001, thanks to the support of the Northwest Territories schools and teachers, more than 165 students took part in the Canada Day Poster Challenge in the territory.

The Minister of Canadian Heritage will invite the 13 provincial and territorial finalists to spend Canada Day in Ottawa, on July 1, 2002. They will join the Prime Minister, the Governor General and the thousands of Canadians who will gather on Parliament Hill to celebrate Canada's 135th birthday.

The Canada Day Poster Challenge was created in 1987. It is one of the most popular programs at the Department of Canadian Heritage. Young people have until February 28, 2002 to send in their drawings to the Northwest Territories Celebrate Canada Committee.
