Canada Day Poster Challenge 2001 Finalist for Nova Scotia Announced

HALIFAX, May 5, 2001 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, Dr. Bridglal Pachai, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for Nova Scotia, today announced that Stephanie Currie, 15, a student at Prince Arthur Junior High School in Dartmouth, has been chosen as the Nova Scotia finalist in the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2001. The announcement was made during a ceremony at Halifax City Hall.

Honourable mentions were awarded to Kate Cassidy, 14, a student at Truro Junior High School in Truro; Kyle Galvin, 13, a student at Truro Junior High School in Truro; Crystal Harvie, 15, a student at Hants West Rural High School in Windsor; Rhea Higgins, 17, a student at Dr. J.H. Gillis Regional High School in Antigonish; Tita Szlachetka, 12, a student at Grosvenor Wentworth School in Bedford; Kellie Hogan, 8, a student at Dwight Ross School in Kingston; Natasa Zatezalo, 11, a student at Basinview Drive Community School in Bedford; Corey Isenor, 13, a student at Riverside Education Centre in Enfield; Carson Isenor, 10, a student at Enfield District School in Enfield; Ellen Somers, 12, a student at Basinview Drive Community School in Bedford; Merrissa Welsh, age 11, a student at Étoile de l'Acadie in North Sydney; and Caitlin Ward, 10, a student at Carleton School in Yarmouth.

Sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2001 was open to young people 18 years of age and under and drew more than 600 entries from across Nova Scotia. Participants were invited to use their imagination to create posters that showed their pride in Canada by interpreting the Poster Challenge theme, "Celebrating Canada's Diversity."

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. All finalists and their guardians will be guests of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.

Jasc Software Inc., the official software sponsor of the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2001, will provide Jasc Paint Shop Pro 7 CDs to the 13 provincial/territorial finalists and runners-up.
