Launch Of The Canada Day Poster Challenge 2001

HALIFAX, January 16, 2001 -- On behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, the Honourable Myra Freeman, Lieutenant Governor for Nova Scotia, and Dr. Bridglal Pachai, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for Nova Scotia, today launched the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2001 in the Province of Nova Scotia. The event took place at Basinview Drive Community School in Bedford.

"The Canada Day Poster Challenge gives Canadians, 18 years of age or under, an opportunity to show their pride in Canada by expressing in a creative way, what Canada and being Canadian means to them," said Minister Copps. "This is also a great way for these young people to take an active part in celebrating Canada Day."

The theme of the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2001 is Celebrating Canada's Diversity.

"Students are invited to highlight the fact that each Canadian has a story to tell. They will therefore be able to discover the importance of their own personal history and explore, with their classmates, the ties that unite the citizens of the country," said Dr. Pachai. "More than 1,100 students in Nova Scotia took part in last year's Canada Day Poster Challenge, and I am convinced the theme this year will foster a similar enthusiasm."

The Minister of Canadian Heritage will invite the 13 provincial and territorial finalists to Ottawa to celebrate Canada Day on Parliament Hill, on July 1st, 2001. They will join with the Prime Minister, the Governor General and other Canadians in celebrating Canada's 134th birthday.

The Canada Day Poster Challenge, initiated in 1987, is one of the most popular programs of the Department of Canadian Heritage. Young people have until February 28, 2001, to send their design to the Celebrate Canada Committee for Nova Scotia.
