Minister Copps Announces the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2002 Finalists for Yukon

WHITEHORSE, April 30, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced that Baily Howatt, 14, a student at Porter Creek Secondary School, in Whitehorse, has been chosen as the Yukon finalist in the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2002. The award presentation will be held at a ceremony in Whitehorse, on Thursday, May 2, at 3:30 p.m., in the atrium of the Elijah Smith Building. The ceremony will be hosted by Yukon Commissioner Jack Cable and the Celebrate Canada Committee for Yukon.

The second place artist was Natasha Dougherty, 13, from Porter Creek Secondary School, in Whitehorse. Jenna LaPlante, 13, also from Porter Creek Secondary School, was third.

"The Canada Day Poster Challenge gives young people an opportunity to discover Canada's history and learn about the adventures of Canadians whose outstanding achievements have helped build Canada. Young people are the future of our country. Every year, we are touched by their creativity and by the images they choose to express their vision of Canada," said Minister Copps.

The theme for the 2002 Canada Day Poster Challenge was "A Celebration of Canadian Firsts." Students were invited to draw a poster representing personal exploits, remarkable achievements or Canadian contributions in the world. Over 130 students from Yukon participated. Posters will be on display in the atrium of the Elijah Smith Building during the week of April 29.

One design will be chosen from among the provincial and territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. The name of the national winner will be announced in June 2002. All finalists and their guardians will be guests of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps in Ottawa, on July 1. They will join the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.

Sympatico and Bell ExpressVu are the official sponsors of the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2002.
