Minister Copps Announces the Names of the 2002 Celebrate Canada Committee Presidents and Vice-Presidents

OTTAWA, May 9, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the names of the presidents and vice-presidents who will head the 2002 Celebrate Canada Committees across the country.

In every province and territory, a Celebrate Canada Committee will organize and promote activities under the Celebrate Canada! program, which takes place from June 21 to July 1. Festivities begin with National Aboriginal Day on June 21, continue with St-Jean-Baptiste Day on June 24, and culminate with Canada Day on July 1. This year, Celebrate Canada! will invite Canadians to celebrate Canadian accomplishments over the last 50 years.

"We are proud of the work accomplished by members of the Celebrate Canada Committees," declared Minister Copps. "Through their efforts and commitment, they offer Canadians a wonderful opportunity to celebrate their inclusion in Canadian society, a society recognized around the world for its openness, bilingualism and multiculturalism, its commitment to democracy and its quality of life."

The Minister has appointed the following people to the positions of president and vice-president of the 2002 Celebrate Canada Committees. The appointments are effective today.

Newfoundland and Labrador:
Tina Fagan, president
Lorne Humphries, vice-president

Nova Scotia:
Marie Hodgson, president
Ross Hamid, vice-president

Prince Edward Island:
James Dunn, president
Edgar Arsenault, vice-president

New Brunswick:
Della Lacenaire, president
Greg Forsythe, vice-president

*Quebec:
Gaétan Boucher, president
Philippe Angers, vice-president

Ontario:
Donovan Bailey, president
Kathleen Thomas and Renée Lapointe, co-vice-presidents

Manitoba:
Mohinder Singh Dhillon, president
Marianne Rivoalen and Glenn Beckwith, co-vice-presidents

Saskatchewan:
Joy Pelling, president
Henri Chabanole and Vernice McIntyre, co-vice-presidents

Alberta:
Helen Rice, president
Sandra Rein, vice-president

British Columbia:
Patrick Nicol, president
Kulwant Dhesi, vice-president

Northwest Territories:
Fred Koe, president
Sue Heron-Herbert, vice-president

* Outgoing president Serge Savard will remain as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Celebrate Canada Committee for Quebec.

The Minister took the opportunity to thank them, as well as the volunteer members of the committees that support them in their tasks. "I am convinced that the activities organized in 2002 will be a resounding success from coast to coast to coast," she concluded.
