Canada Day to be Celebrated in the Capital

OTTAWA, June 28, 2002 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps and National Capital Commission (NCC) Chairman Marcel Beaudry today confirmed that Canada Day activities on Parliament Hill and in the National Capital Region will take place as scheduled. Minister Copps and Mr. Beaudry made this announcement on behalf of the Government of Canada.

The focal point for most Canadians remains Parliament Hill, where a full range of ceremonies and festivities are planned. In the morning, Canadians are invited to attend the traditional flag-raising ceremony, the Changing the Guard ceremony, and the RCMP Musical Ride.

These activities will be followed by the Canada Day Noon Show, whose theme will be "50 Years of Canadian Accomplishments." The musical group, The Travellers will kick off the show, which features performers representing each decade from the 1950's to the present: The Four Lads, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Nanette Workman, Offenbach, Maestro, and Gabrielle Destroismaisons. Next on the bill are the always spectacular Snowbirds. The noon show will be broadcast live on CBC/Radio-Canada.

At 8:30 p.m., the big Canada Day show will be held on Parliament Hill, with David Usher, lead singer of the group Moist, and the legendary rock group Offenbach. Stefie Shock and The Arrogant Worms will also perform. The traditional fireworks display will close the program.

Also taking place as scheduled are a wide variety of activities and shows planned for Major's Hill Park, Jacques-Cartier Park and Confederation Park.

"Canadians will have the opportunity to once again celebrate Canada in the National Capital Region and on Parliament Hill. We should all be proud to live in, and contribute to, a nation that welcomes the world. Let's celebrate Canada!," said Minister Copps.

"I invite Canadians to come in multitudes to celebrate Canada's 135th birthday in their capital. Our program of activities will delight the entire family," said Mr. Beaudry.
