Minister Copps Invites Youth from Quebec to Participate in the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge

MONTREAL, January 17, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today invited students from Quebec to participate in the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge.

The Canada Day Poster Challenge is open to Canadians 18 and under. The theme for 2003 is "Celebrating Canada's Natural Beauty."

"Young people are invited to discover the richness and diversity of Canada's natural heritage and to create posters that illustrate their interpretation of nature's beauty," said Minister Copps. "The Poster Challenge gives young people an opportunity to express their pride in being Canadian and to celebrate the fact that they are part of Canadian society."

The Minister of Canadian Heritage will invite the 13 provincial and territorial finalists to celebrate Canada Day in Ottawa, on July 1, 2003. They will join the Prime Minister, the Governor General, and thousands of other Canadians on Parliament Hill for Canada's 136th birthday festivities.

In 2002, with the support of schools and teachers, more than 900 students from Quebec took part in the Canada Day Poster Challenge.

Contestants have until February 28, 2003 to submit their design to the Quebec regional office of Canadian Heritage.

First held in 1987, the Canada Day Poster Challenge has become one of the most popular Department of Canadian Heritage programs. To find out more about the Challenge, visit our Web site at www.canadianheritage.gc.ca/affiche-poster

The Trans Canada Trail Foundation and Sympatico.caTM are the official sponsors of the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge.
