Minister of Canadian Heritage Announces the Name of the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge Finalist for Nova Scotia

HALIFAX, May 5, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge finalist for Nova Scotia. The winner is Katie Hillman, age 14, of Leslie Thomas Junior High School in Lower Sackville. The finalist's name was revealed at a ceremony held at Pier 21 National Historic Site, in Halifax.

Honourable mentions were awarded to Eman Hawass, age 16, of Maritime Muslim Academy, in Halifax; Kaitlynn Sampson, age 12, of East Richmond Education Centre, in St. Peters; Jessica Kilford, age 15, of Lockview High School, in Fall River; Steven Andrews, age 12, of Redcliff Middle School, in Truro; Sarah Height, age 10, of Digby Elementary School, in Digby; Ryan Barford, age 16, of Park View Education Centre, in Bridgewater; Alison Kervin, age 14, of Herring Cove Junior High School, in Halifax; Andrea Lafleur, age 13, of Uniacke District School, in Mount Uniacke; and Adèle Boudreau, age 16, of École du Carrefour du Grand-Havre, in Dartmouth.

"Every year, thousands of young Canadians take part in the Poster Challenge," said Minister Copps. "These young artists have the talent to introduce us to their own world through their designs. The images they have chosen to illustrate this year's theme are records of their exploration of Canada's flora and fauna and their love for the natural environment around them. By participating in this competition, they have become aware of how important it is to protect Canada's natural heritage."

The theme of the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge is Celebrating Canada's Natural Beauty. Young people were asked to explore all the rich diversity of Canada's natural heritage and to create posters showing how they view the beauty of nature. Some 488 students from Nova Scotia took part in the 2003 Challenge.

The design of one of the provincial or territorial finalists will be chosen as the official Canada Day poster and distributed throughout the country. The name of the national winner will be announced in June 2003. All the finalists and their escorts will be guests of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps in Ottawa, on July 1. They will join with thousands of other Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill to celebrate Canada Day.

The Trans Canada Trail Foundation and Sympatico.ca™ are the official sponsors of the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge.
