Minister of Canadian Heritage Announces the Quebec Finalist in the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge

BROSSARD, March 31, 2003 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps today announced the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge finalist from Quebec. The winner is Melissa Rancourt, age 16, of Macdonald Cartier High School in Saint-Hubert. The finalist's name was revealed at a ceremony held at École secondaire Antoine-Brossard, in Brossard.

In second place was Reiko Caron, 17 years old, of Polyvalente Thetford Mines, in Thetford Mines. Third place went ex-aequo to Cloé Jacques-Côté, 15 years old, of Polyvalente Thetford Mines, in Thetford Mines, and Kristy Hoobin, 14 years old, of MacDonald-Cartier High School in Saint-Hubert.

"Every year, thousands of young Canadians take part in the Poster Challenge," said
Minister Copps. "These young artists have the talent to introduce us to their own world through their designs. The images they have chosen to illustrate this year's theme are records of their exploration of Canada's flora and fauna and their love for the natural environment. By participating in this competition, they have become aware of how important it is to protect Canada's natural heritage."

The theme of the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge is Celebrating Canada's Natural Beauty. Young people were asked to explore all the rich diversity of Canada's natural heritage and to create posters showing how they view the beauty of nature. Some 1500 students from Quebec took part in the 2003 Challenge.

The design of one of the provincial or territorial finalists will be chosen as the official Canada Day poster and distributed throughout the country. The name of the national winner will be announced in June 2003. All the finalists and their escorts will be guests of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps in Ottawa, on July 1. They will join with thousands of other Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill to celebrate Canada Day.

The Trans Canada Trail Foundation and Sympatico.caÿ are the official sponsors of the 2003 Canada Day Poster Challenge.
