Government of Canada announces funding for two groups in Nova Scotia

HALIFAX, July 1, 2003 -- Geoff Regan, Member of Parliament (Halifax West), on behalf of Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheila Copps, today announced funding of $46,000 for two groups in Nova Scotia.

"The Government of Canada is proud to support groups that actively promote Canada and celebrate our Canadian institutions, accomplishments, and heroes," said Mr. Regan. "By celebrating Canada, we ensure that the cultural legacy of the past remains alive today."

The Celebrate Canada! Committee for Nova Scotia received $24,000 to support its efforts to promote, coordinate, and facilitate Celebrate Canada! activities throughout Nova Scotia. The Committee partnered with local organizations and schools to deliver programs and services of the Department of Canadian Heritage, such as the Canada Day Poster Challenge, and National Flag of Canada Day.

The Halifax-Dartmouth Canada Day Committee received $22,000, which was be used to organize the largest civic event in Nova Scotia to celebrate Canada Day.

Financial assistance was provided by the Department of Canadian Heritage under the Canada Day Program. The objective of this program is to enhance pride in Canada by encouraging the participation of Canadians in the celebration of their country, during the 11 days between June 21 and July 1.

Funding for these projects was provided for in the February 2003 federal Budget.
