Minister Frulla Announces Canada Day Poster Challenge 2005 Winner for Manitoba

WINNIPEG, April 14, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced the name of the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2005 winner and finalists for Manitoba. The winner is Sheryl-Rose San Miguel, age 16, of St. Boniface Diocesan High School in Winnipeg.

Second-place is awarded to Jenny Waldner, age 14, of Baker School in MacGregor. Third-place goes to Michelle Alina, age 17, of St. Mary's Academy in Winnipeg. A ceremony to honour participants in the Poster Challenge will be held at the Lieutenant Governor's residence. A list of the fifteen students who received honourable mentions is attached.

"The year 2005 marks Alberta and Saskatchewan's Centennial, and this contest provided thousands of young Canadians with an opportunity to explore the richness and history of these two provinces," said Minister Frulla.

"On behalf of the Celebrate Canada Committee (Manitoba), I would like to congratulate our finalists and all those who received honourable mentions," said David Northcott, President of the Committee. "I would also like to thank all of the young people who entered and the schools and teachers whose support makes the Poster Challenge possible every year."

The theme of this year's Canada Day Poster Challenge is "Canada from East to West." The contest enabled participants in Manitoba to explore Canada and to discover the people who played a part in settling the West and helped to make Canada a diverse, prosperous country.

The design of one of the provincial or territorial winners will be chosen as the official Canada Day 2005 poster and distributed throughout the country. The name of the national winner will be announced sometime in April. All winners and their escorts will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women in Ottawa on July 1, where they will join thousands of other Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill to celebrate Canada's 138th birthday.

The national winner and his or her parent or guardian will win a seven-day trip to Japan to visit the Canada Pavilion at the 2005 World Exposition, which takes place in Aichi, from March 25 to September 25.

Initiated in 1987, the Canada Day Poster Challenge is one of the Department of Canadian Heritage's most popular programs. The Historica Foundation of Canada, the Dominion Institute, the Trans Canada Trail Foundation, the Canadian Children's Museum, and the Hbc family of stores -- the Bay, Zellers, and Home Outfitters -- are official partners of this year's Canada Day Poster Challenge.
