Minister Frulla Announces the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2005 Winner for New Brunswick
FREDERICTON, April 26, 2005 -- Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women Liza Frulla today announced the name of the Canada Day Poster Challenge 2005 winner and finalists for New Brunswick. The winner is Monica Melanson, age 14, of the Polyvalente Clément-Cormier in Bouctouche.Second place is awarded to Francis Thériault, age 17, of the Polyvalente Louis-Mailloux in Caraquet. Third place goes to Emma Phinney, age 17, of Sackville Christian Academy in Sackville. Fourth place goes to Shana Clark, age 11, of Chipman Forest Avenue School in Chipman. Fifth place goes to Mira D. Chiasson, age 13, of the École Abbey-Landry in Memramcook. A ceremony to honour all the winners will take place on Friday, May 6 at Old Government House in Fredericton.
"The year 2005 marks Alberta and Saskatchewan's Centennial, and this contest provided thousands of young Canadians with an opportunity to explore the richness and history of these two provinces," said Minister Frulla.
"New Brunswick's youth has yet again demonstrated the talent and creativity that resides here," said Della Lacenaire, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee in New Brunswick. "I wish to congratulate all participants."
The theme of this year's Canada Day Poster Challenge is "Canada from East to West." The contest enabled more than 640 participants in New Brunswick to explore Canada and to discover the people who played a part in settling the West and helped to make Canada a diverse, prosperous country.
The design of one of the provincial or territorial winners will be chosen as the official Canada Day 2005 poster and distributed throughout the country. The name of the national winner will be announced sometime in April. All winners and their escorts will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Status of Women in Ottawa on July 1, where they will join thousands of other Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill to celebrate Canada's 138th birthday.
The national winner and a parent or guardian will win a seven-day trip to Japan to visit the Canada Pavilion at the 2005 World Exposition, which takes place in Aichi, from March 25 to September 25.
Initiated in 1987, the Canada Day Poster Challenge is one of the Department of Canadian Heritage's most popular programs. The Historica Foundation of Canada, the Dominion Institute, the Trans Canada Trail Foundation, the Canadian Children's Museum, and the Hbc family of stores -- the Bay, Zellers, and Home Outfitters -- are official partners of this year's Canada Day Poster Challenge.
