1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge New Brunswick Finalist Announced

MONCTON, April 23, 1999 -- Matthew Brown of Moncton, age 12, was chosen as the New Brunswick finalist in the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge. The announcement was made today by Mr. Robert Basque, President of the Celebrate Canada Committee for New Brunswick.

The second, third, fourth and fifth place winners were Christina Bonner, age 12, of Renforth, Melissa Keehn, age 13, of New Maryland, Jennifer Meloche, 13, of Moncton and Marie-Michelle Aubé, 12, of Kedgwick respectively. Hanna Button, age 10, of Moncton received a special mention.

An initiative of the Department of Canadian Heritage, the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge was open to young people 18 years of age and under and drew close to 19,000 entries from across Canada, of which 2,000 were from New Brunswick. Participants were invited to design a poster that shows their favourite heroes and why they are proud of these people and their country.

One design will be chosen from the thirteen provincial or territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. Matthew Brown and his guardian will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Honourable Sheila Copps, in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.

Mr. Basque personally congratulated the New Brunswick winners during a ceremony held at the Hôtel Beauséjour, in Moncton. He also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to the Hôtel Beauséjour for providing accommodations for the finalists and their families from outside Moncton. He also thanked Toshiba Canada for providing the provincial finalist' class with a computer (value of $2,000) and the Department of Education for its gifts to the six participants whose posters were recognized.

Guest speaker, Constable Patricia Thibodeau mentioned the importance of heroes and the fact that each and every person can be called a hero at some point in their life.

The New Brunswick selection committee was made up of Rachel LeBlanc, Celebrate Canada Committee for New Brunswick; Charles Flewelling and Rosemonde Chiasson, representing the New Brunswick Department of Education; Julie Boulianne, artist; and Lucie LeBouthillier, representing the Department of Canadian Heritage.
