1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge Ontario Winner Announced

TORONTO, May 4, 1999 -- Heidi Zhang, age 10, of Toronto has been chosen as the Ontario winner in the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge. The Honourable Hilary M. Weston, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, and the Celebrate Canada Committee for Ontario, made the announcement today.

The second and third place winners were Matthew Chung, from Scarborough, and Sidney Wong, from Toronto, both 17 years old.

The 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge was open to young people 18 years of age and under, and drew approximately 19,000 entries from across Canada. Participants were invited to use their imagination to draw posters that show their pride in Canada by recognizing Canadian heroes. The program is sponsored by the Department of Canadian Heritage.

"I am pleased that the Canada Day Poster Challenge encourages youth to develop a sense of national vision that contributes to our cultural identity," stated Mrs. Weston.

Ms. Zhang's poster enthusiastically displays a variety of Canadian heroes. Her winning entry includes images of noteworthy Canadians such as former Prime Ministers, athletes, writers, astronauts, and the RCMP. A team of judges comprised of artists, book publishers, communicators, arts administrators and heritage consultants formed the evaluating committee for Ontario.

Sponsors for the 1999 Canada Day Poster Challenge include: the Canadian Space Agency, Crayola Inc., the Canadian Five Pin Bowling Association, the Department of National Defence, McClelland & Stewart Inc., Owl Book Publishing, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, le Salon du Livre de Toronto, Sony Canada, Sullivan Entertainment, TFO, and YTV.

One design will be chosen from among the provincial/territorial finalists as the official Canada Day poster to be distributed across the country. Ms. Zhang and her guardian will be guests of the Minister of Canadian Heritage, Sheila Copps, in Ottawa on July 1. They will join the Governor General, the Prime Minister and the thousands of Canadians who gather on Parliament Hill to take part in the Canada Day festivities.
